It’s beginning to dawn on members of Congress (of both parties) that they have handed over too much power to the executive branch. We’ve warned them for decades, particularly about surveillance authorities and secrecy, but it took two years of the Trump administration for many members to understand.

So we are pressing our advantage.

We have an opportunity to stop intelligence agencies from collecting our phone, email and other records in bulk when Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act sunsets at the end of 2019.

Two weeks ago, we sent a strong letter to Democrats in Congress explaining why they in particular should oppose any effort to renew Section 215.

This week, we join with dozens of other civil liberties and accountability groups to explain to every member of Congress why they should let the authority expire.

The letter is available here and below.
