Challenging Countering Violent Extremism Programs in the DMV:
What Everyone Needs to Know
Monday, Nov. 12
6 PM
Potters House
1658 Columbia Rd NW

The program Countering Violent Extremism was initiated under former President Obama under the guise of preventative and soft counter-terrorism measures. The premise of these programs are based on empirically unsound theories of radicalization which basically equate beliefs, perspectives, and opinions – especially those that are unpopular – with propensity to commit acts of violence. Though the programs were theoretically designed to target anyone at risk of becoming “radicalized,” they have in practice focused almost exclusively on Muslims, although we are starting to see them target LGBTQ and Black activists. These programs, which involve surveillance and other measures designed to entrap individuals, have been piloted in cities across the United States and have increasingly been used in the DMV area, with active programs in Montgomery County and Washington DC. This panel and know your rights training will include the following:

– An overview of CVE and what you need to know
– How CVE is being implemented in DC
– How to identify CVE programs
– How to assert your rights in the context of these programs
– Ways to get involved with JMC and partner organizations to end CVE programs in the greater Washington area

Speakers:
Kristin Garrity Sekerci, The Bridge Initiative

Yolanda Rondon, American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee,
Law 4 Black Lives

Hena Zuberi, Rashidun DC

Moderated by Dr. Maha Hilal, Justice for Muslims Collective
