Donald Trump has nominated Kenneth Marcus’s for Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). Marcus has a long history of attempting to silence Palestinian human rights activists. His attempts to silence dissent have long been opposed by Defending Rights & Dissent.

Today, we sent a letter to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions opposing his nomination. As we explained in the letter,

Marcus’ interest in civil rights seems limited to advancing unusual legal theories to silence opinions on Palestine-Israel he disagrees with. As the DOE’s Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, Marcus would endanger the First Amendment and civil rights, his nomination should be rejected.
