July 20, 2026Panel Event: NSPM-7 and the Threat to Press Freedom
NSPM-7, Trump’s presidential memo detailing his plan to crackdown on dissent and the left, also poses a serious threat to journalists and their constitutionally protected right to practice their profession.
Next Wednesday, July 22, at 2pm ET, Defending Rights & Dissent Policy Director Chip Gibbons will join a live panel discussion on ‘NSPM-7: A Threat to Press Freedom’, to outline how the memo silences free speech and how it could be used to target news outlets, journalists, and their confidential sources.
The webinar, hosted by Freedom of the Press Foundation, will also feature the Brennan Center’s Faiza Patel and investigative reporter Daniel Boguslaw. FPF Senior Advocacy Adviser Caitlin Vogus will moderate.
Gibbons is a researcher focusing on U.S. national security policy who has written about NSPM-7 as Trump’s ‘blueprint to crush the left’, drawing from decades of counterterrorism policy to escalate attacks on his political adversaries. Gibbons is the author of The Imperial Bureau: The FBI, Political Surveillance, and the Rise of the US National Security State, forthcoming from Verso Books.
