Take action immediately: As Trump weighs joining Israel’s war with Iran, Congress must tell him NO!
Today, Reps. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Thomas Massie (R-KY) will introduce a bipartisan resolution in the House to invoke the War Powers Act and prevent President Trump from taking U.S. military action against Iran without Congressional approval. Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced a similar resolution in the Senate yesterday.
As War Powers Resolutions are privileged, they will be brought to the floor for a vote. Urge your representatives to support this legislation today, before Trump starts another unconstitutional war.
These resolutions come after Israel launched an unprovoked attack against Iran and is openly trying to drag the US into its war. On the first day of Israel’s attack, it struck more than 100 targets, killing hundreds. Iran predictably responded with retaliatory strikes on Tel Aviv, adding to the human toll of the war. On Monday Israel bombed Iranian state television in Tehran, which under international legal precedents is undeniably a war crime.
Israel’s act of aggression in violation of the UN Charter came as the Trump administration publicly touted its diplomatic efforts with Iran. During its opening wave of attacks, Israel assassinated one of the top Iranian officials negotiating with the U.S. And earlier this year, Director National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Congress it was the finding of the Intelligence Community that Iran was not pursuing nuclear weapons.
Israel’s war of choice does not trump the U.S. Constitution. As Defending Rights & Dissent Policy Director Chip Gibbons explained, “In the U.S., we have no kings. Only Congress, not the President, can take us to war. With Israel trying to draw the U.S. into war with Iran and the Trump admin’s role unclear, Congress must immediately invoke the War Powers Act before this madness spirals further.”
Write to your congressmembers today, and urge them to support this important legislation. Unilateral action on Iran would be unconstitutional, immoral, and dangerous—senselessly risking dragging the U.S. into another prolonged military conflict in the region with no end in sight.
Take action now: Urge your Senators and Representatives to sign on to these bills at once!
